History about Japan and Colombia

Colombia known for their fight against the negative reputation that the country has since the mid of the 1980s have been playing international football competitions since 1938. They had their first official matches played during the 1938 Central American and Caribbean Games. They played their first game against Mexico on 10 February of that year. And in it, they were defeated in a 1-3 game.

On the other hand, the Japan national football team is said to gradually begin after Lieutenant-Commander Archibald L. Douglas arrived in Japan as the head of a Royal Navy mission. It was during that time that the instructor began to teach his cadets how to play football as a pastime. And officially, the Japan Football Association which is the body in charge of governing association football in Japan was founded in 1921.

Also called Selección de fútbol de Colombia in the Spanish language, the team is representing Colombia at international men’s football competitions. FIFA World Cup Appearances

Commonly known by the fans and media as Sakkā Nippon Daihyō, Japan is unarguably one of the most successful squad that Asia as a continent has produced. They have qualified so far for the FIFA World Cups in the last six consecutive times. And in the 2002 and 2010 tournaments, the team was able to advance to the second round.

The first appearance that Colombia would make at the FIFA Mega tournament was in 1962, although they entered for the World Cup qualifiers in 1958. After the ended up at the group stage, they never qualified again for the World Cup until 1990 where they could not go past the round of 16.
Apart from their qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament, Colombia has made a total of five appearances out of the fifteen attempts that have been made so far.

Also, on the part of Japan, apart from their qualification for the 2018 World Cup, out of the fourteen attempts that the team has made, they only made it to five FIFA World Cup tournaments. The highest level they have entered so far is the round of sixteen which was in 2002 and 2010.

Continental Tournaments Appearances

Since their appearances at the AFC Asian Cup tournaments, Japan has made consecutive appearances until date. Out of eight appearances, they have won the cup on four different occasions which were in 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2011. Also, they finished in the fourth place once in 2007.

At the South American Championship / Copa Américatournaments, the Colombia national football team won the cup once in 2001. More so, since their first appearance in 1975, they have emerged as the runners-up once in 1975 and also took the third place on four different occasions which are in 1987, 1993, 1995 and 2016.

Honorary Titles and Major Accomplishments

Colombia won the FIFA World Cup Fair Play Award once in 2014, and at the Confederations Cup, they ended at the fourth Place in 2003. They have also been the runners-up of the CONCACAF Gold Cup once in 2000 and took the third place in 2005. And at the Central American and Caribbean Games, while they emerged as the winners in 1946, they took the third Place in 1938.

Japan is said to be the only team that would participate in the Copa América from outside the Americas. They got their invitations in 1999 as well as in 2011 to participate in the noble tournament.
At the international level,  Japan won the Bronze Medal during the Olympic Games in 1968 and then emerged as the runners-up during the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2001. At the Continental level, they have emerged as the winners of the AFC Asian Cup four times which are in 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2011.

Also, they have gotten some individual awards like the Japan Professional Sports Grand Prize in 2002 and the AFC National Team of the Year five different times which are in 2000, 2005, 2008, 2010, and 2011.
