The second set of national football teams that would be meeting from Group H at the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup hosted by Russia are Poland and Senegal national football teams. The two teams would be meeting at the Spartak stadium in Moscow on Tuesday, June 19 by 4 p.m.
Also known as Reprezentacja Polski w piłce nożnejin Polish language, Poland is dated to have their first official international match played on 18 December 1921in Budapest. In the game played against Hungary, they lost the game in a 1-0 game. However, the first time the national football team would win a match was on 28 May 1922. At that event, they played against Sweden in Stockholm and ended up beating them in a 2-1 game.
The Senegal national football team officially began after the country got her independence on 4 April 1960 from France. It was in the same year that the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) was founded.
The Senegal national football team with the nickname the Lions of Teranga is the national football team that represents Senegal at international football competitions. The team is under the leadership of the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF).
Also, the Poland national football team is the national football association that represents Poland in international men’s football competitions. The football team is under the control of the Polish Football Association which is the body that governs football in Poland. The governing body, also known as Polski Związek Piłki Nożnej in the Polish language was established on 20 December 1919 in Warsaw after the country became independent.
FIFA World Cup Appearance
While Poland qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 1937, Senegal became a part of the FIFA body in 1962 as well as a member of the Confederation of African Football in 1963. But then, they could not participate in any FIFA World Cup until 2002 when they made their first appearance. During that time, they left the world in awe after defeating the World and European champions France in a 1–0 game at the opening match of the tournament.
The qualification of Poland national football team for the FIFA mega event became possible after they defeated Yugoslavia in a 4-0 game. After their initial appearance at the World Cup, the national soccer team played a memorable match in the history of the World Cup when they played against Brazil. Even though Poland had never participated at such a level before, they were expected to lose the match to Brazil because the next national soccer team was believed to be on the hard-to-beat side; the reverse became the case.
All the attempts of Senegal to appear at the FIFA World Cup since 1970 was futile until 2002 where they finished at the quarter-finals round.
After their first appearance at the FIFA mega event in 1938, Poland could not partake in the world tournaments until after 36 years in 1974. Unable to enter in 1950 and to withdraw in 1954, the team could not qualify until 1974. At the 1974 tournament, they finished in the third place.
Senegal’s participation at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament began in 1965. During the tournament, they played against Ivory Coast and got defeated in a 1-0 game making them finish in the fourth place. Again, after partaking in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1990, the team yet again ended up at the fourth place.
But as for Poland, the first time that they would qualify for a continental match was in 2008 during the UEFA European Championship. Also, the first time the team would win was during the group stage match that they played at the Euro 2016 on 12 June. The match was played against Northern Ireland.

Poland jointly hosted the Euro 2012 alongside Ukraine. But unfortunately, the national soccer team finished at the bottom position of their group in the two games they played.
The team won their first ever gold medal during the Summer Olympics organized in 1972 at Munich. At the Summer Olympics of 1976, they won the silver medal in Montreal, and at Barcelona, they got a silver medal in 1992.
Apart from Cameroon and Ghana that got to the quarter-finals stage of the FIFA mega event in 1990 and 2010 respectively, Senegal is the third team to reach that stage among the African football teams. They got to this stage at the 2002 tournament.
During the playoffs at the 2002 FIFA mega-tournament, the national star, El-Hadji Diouf, was declared as the second scorer of the competition for the nine goals accounted to him. Senegal has so far finished in the top five of many of the Africa Cup of Nations they have played. They also remain a record breaker as they have emerged as champions eight different times during the regional football competitions organized for West African nations known as Amilcar Cabral Cup.
Other Team Honours
Apart from being the champions of the Amilcar Cabral Cup at eight different times, Senegal has also emerged as the runners-up on five occasions which are in 1982, 1993, 1997, 2000, and 2005. The national soccer team was also the runners-up of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 2002.
Poland on the other hand, apart from finishing in the third place two times at the 1974 and 1982 FIFA World Cup tournaments, they also got to the quarter-finals stage of the UEFA European Championship in 2016.
According to the FIFA COCA-COLA World Rankings of 13 April 2018, Poland is ranked 10th in the world while Senegal is ranked 28th.
