Luis Alberto Suárez Díaz is one of the all-time strikers that have been produced by the Spanish club Barcelona. Popularly known as Luis Suárez, he is also a professional player with the Uruguay national football team. He was born on 24 January 1987 in Salto, Uruguay, to the family of Rodolfo and Sandra Suarez.
Early Life and Family:
Often referred to as one of the best players in the world, Luis Suárez comes from a family of eight children. His background was characterized with that of poverty so that even to afford a pair of football boots was difficult for him. His father, from a poor mixed background with African ancestors, was a porter.
Luis Suárez has an elder brother also, Paolo Suarez, who is a professional football player. He was said to play for the National Football League of Guatemala. Despite the poor background of Luis Suárez, while growing up, he never left his passion for football. In fact, he began playing on the street in his early days in life.
Although not bright in academics and not even thinking of making a fortune out of football as a career, the poor state of his family became a reason for him to pursue a sport. With the passion with which he pursued a sport, the mother encouraged him by introducing him to Urreta, a rich football club in Montevideo at that time. It was there the young footballer scored a hat-trick as a substitute in his first friendly match which would end up marking the beginning of his way to stardom.

Luis Suárez’s began his career as a youth player in 2003. His first professional match came when he was privileged to play for National youth club against Copa Libertadores. It was during this match that he recorded his first senior-level goal with an impressive overhead kick. Out of the 34 times that he played for the Nacional youth club, he recorded 12 goals which he scored for them.
He was privileged to play his way to international football when he joined the Uruguayan national football team and played the U-20 World Cup in Canada. With this, he became more acquainted with the dynamics of international professional football.
After relocating to the Netherlands at the age of 19, he got offers from two football clubs, Groningen and Ajax, to play professional football. After playing for Groningen within a short period of time, he was picked and had to transfer to Ajax in 2007for 7.5 million Euros. While he was playing with Ajax, he recorded 111 goals in 159 matches for the club which made him get the recognition as the Dutch Footballer of the Year as well as the league’s top scorer. He also helped Ajax secure the Eredivisie title.
In January 2011, Liverpool Football Club hired Suárez for an unbelievable amount of 22.8 million Euros, thus making him one of the most expensive players of the club. On his joining the club, he went ahead to help the team win the Champions League in his first full season at the club.
As if that was all, Luis Suárez, in 2014, was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year as well as FWA Footballer of the Year. He also won for himself the Premier League Golden Boot and also shared the European Golden Shoe with Cristiano Ronaldo. It was after this that he was moved in a transfer to Barcelona for €82.3 million which made him one of the most expensive players in the history of football.
On his arrival at Barcelona Football Club, Luis Suárez became one of the club’s three main strikers alongside with Messi and Neymar. It was after he became part of the team that the club registered another historic win of the prestigious continental treble consisting of the La Liga, Copa dal Rey and UEFA Champions League for the second time.
Back in his national football team, Uruguay, Suarez was instrumental in the national team’s success of finishing in the fourth position finish during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. More so, he helped his national football team to bag a record fifteenth Copa America. Then in 2011, he was named as the Player of the Tournament.
During the 2012 Olympic Games, Suarez captained the Uruguay national team, and by the year 2013, he rose to stardom and became the star player of Uruguay during the Confederation Cup because of an important goal he scored in their opening game against Spain. The 31 years old Luis Suárez plays the position of an attacker. In height, he is 182 cm, and regarding weight, he is 86 kg. Talking about the right foot professional player, while in Groningen, he made 31 times appearances in matches with 11 goals, 122 appearances in Ajax with 93 goals, and 119 appearances as well in Liverpool with 69 goals.
According to his club’s official website, Barcelona, “Luis Suárez continues to set new landmarks. With his goal against Celta in La Liga on Saturday, the Uruguayan striker now moves into the all-time top 10 goal scorers list in Barça history.” In 165 matches that he had appeared since his joining the club, he has made a total of 127 goals which is equal to the current tenth place of Àngel Arocha, the legendary striker from the 1930s.
Luis Suárez is a distinguished player with many honors and prizes. So far in his career, he has won 14 trophies as well as four league titles, a UEFA Champions League title, and a Copa América. As a goal scorer also, he has two European Golden Shoes, an Eredivisie Golden Boot, and a Premier League Golden Boot, all to his credit
Also, in 2015, he won the FIFA Club World Cup Golden Ball and the FIFA Club World Cup, Golden Boot. He was also named LaLiga World Player of the Year for the year 2015 – 2016 while in May 2016 and December 2017, he was honored as La Liga Player of the Month. More so, he became the Barcelona Player of the Season (Trofeo Aldo Rovira) for 2015–16 and Copa del Rey top goalscorer for 2015–16.
