Historical Backgrounds of Croatia and Iceland
Formerly known as the Icelandic Football League, the Iceland national football team was founded in 1912. The team which is also known as Íslenskakarlalandsliðið í knattspyrnu in Icelandic is under the control of the Football Association of Iceland. In the Icelandic language, the association is also known to beKnattspyrnusambandÍslands, KSÍ. The association is the body that governs all football in Iceland. It is also in charge of coaching and giving referee education, license and nurturing those who have interest in sport at their local level.
Known as Hrvatskanogometnareprezentacija in the Croatian language, the Croatia national football team is, as well, the official soccer squad that represents Croatia in international men’s football competitions. The national football team is under the leadership of the Croatian Football Federation which is the governing body of football in the nation.
Although the name seems to be unpronounceable, in Icelandic, Knattspyrna means “ball-kicking.”
Appearances of the Teams at International Competitions
Even though they had been playing football games in the 1940s as the Banovina of Croatia and Independent State of Croatia, the national football team of Croatia was officially formed in 1990 before they got their independence from Yugoslavia. And by the year 1993, the team became a member of FIFA and UEFA.
After they got established in 1912, the Icelandic Football League had their first international match played on 29 July 1930. It was then that the team played against the Faroe Islands in an away match with a 1-0 win game. Although, at that time, the two teams were not yet affiliated with FIFA.
Apart from that, the first match that FIFA would officially recognize was the one the Icelandic team played in Reykjavík. The match that was played against the Denmark team was held on 17 July 1946. At the event, the Icelandic team lost to Denmark in a 0–3 loss game.
After their formal admission into FIFA body following their independence, although the Croatia soccer could not enter for the FIFA Mega Event qualifiers, it was able to play its way through at the 1998 World Cup tournament. The reason they could not enter the World Cup qualification match of 1994 was that qualification had started before they got officially recognized.
More so, for Iceland the first time they would record a victory at the international level was when they played against Finland in 1947. It is recorded that for the first 20 years that the Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ)’s have existed, the team did not take part in qualifying for any of the FIFA World Cup as well as the UEFA European Championship.
However, since 1974, they broke the record, and they have been making appearances in qualifying for all of the World Cup and European Championship tournaments. The first time that the team would be making an appearance at the FIFA World Cup tournament is this 2018 upcoming event. This became possible after the team defeated Kosovo in a 2–0 win game. And by this, they are described as the country with the lowest population that would make it to the final tournament.
A remarkable thing about the Croatian is how they speedily rose up the ranking table of FIFA. It was noticed that immediately after their admission into FIFA in 1993, the team was ranked as a 125th in the world. But as a result of the 1998 World Cup campaign, they immediately rose to the third place in the FIFA World rankings. The effect of this is that they became the most volatile team in the history of FIFA Rankings.
On the part of the Icelandic soccer squad, it is also made known that the squad, during the UEFA Euro 2016, after a home and away matches that they won against the Netherlands, they were able to make it to their first major tournament after the qualification campaign. Because of this feat, they made history as the smallest nation to ever qualify for a major tournament.
Based on their appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 1998, the Croatia national team finished in the third place. Worthy of note is the fact that their appearance also gave birth to the tournament’s top scorer known to be DavorŠuker.
Moreover, out of the sixteen matches that they have played since their appearance in the FIFA World Cup in 1998, they have had seven wins, seven losses, and two draw games. And based on some of the minor matches that they have played, they emerged as the runners-up of the Kirin Cup in 1997 while they won the Korea Cup in 1999.
Traditionally nicknamed as Vatreni which means “The Blazers,” the Croatian football squad, in 1994, was named as FIFA’s “Best Mover of the Year.” Then in 1998, after winning the title again, the national football team became the only squad, together with Colombia, to win that award more than once.
